What is an SBIR grant?

A Small Business Innovation Research grant is funded by the US federal government to help spur innovation in the US economy. Only US-based small businesses can apply. Grants start with a Phase I award of $ 100k–$300k, depending on the agency, and are eligible for Phase II awards, often over $1M.
How can I tell if my startup is a good fit for an SBIR?

Generally speaking, you need to be commercializing new technology that has a relatively high risk of failure. This failure risk limits the availability of private capital to fund the development of the new technology. Additionally, you need to be working on something that supports the funding agency’s mission.
What are the first things I should do to start applying to an SBIR grant?
